Police arrest 28 for suspected DUI

Big Island police arrested 28 motorists for suspected drunken driving Feb. 1 and Sunday. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic crash and two were younger than age 21.

South Hilo officers arrested 11 drivers while Kona officers arrested nine and Puna officers six, according to data released Tuesday by the Hawaii Police Department. South Kohala officers two drivers.

So far this year, there have been 138 DUI arrests compared with 116 during the same period last year, according to police.

There have been 68 major accidents so far this year compared with 108 during the same period last year.

Five fatalities have been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways this year, police said. By this time in 2020, three people had died.
